Groundwater heat pump from Heliotherm
Heliotherm groundwater heat pump

Groundwater heat pumps harness the free energy stored in groundwater. This is pumped up from the layers of earth containing groundwater through a supply well, travels through a heat exchanger in the heat pump where the energy transfer takes place and is then returned to the groundwater layers through a return well (infiltration well).

Groundwater has a fairly constant temperature of 7–12°C all the year round. This means that the temperature only has to be raised slightly in order to be used for heating purposes, in comparison to other sources of heat.

Energy is output and absorbed via two heat exchangers. The heat exchanger on the groundwater side transfers the heat from the groundwater to the working fluid in the heat pump. This working fluid can evaporate even at extremely low outdoor temperatures (-15°C). The working fluid travels as a gas through the refrigerant pipes to the heat pump’s compressor, where it is pressurised and thus heated to a higher temperature. The heat from the hot gas is then transferred to the heating water (underfloor heating) in the heat exchanger on the heating side. This causes the working fluid to condense back to liquid.
The expansion valve (dsi technology) is used to bring the working fluid down to a low temperature to enable energy to be absorbed in the heat exchanger again (groundwater side). The heat pump cycle is then repeated.

BENEFITS of the Heliotherm groundwater heat pump

  • Groundwater is a constant source of heat the whole year round. The temperature only has to be raised slightly in comparison to other systems
  • Because drilling the wells takes up little space, the system is perfect for small areas of land and refurbishments
  • The closed loop makes the system totally safe and completely maintenance-free
  • The DSG housing from Heliotherm enables the heat pump to run exceptionally quietly
  • The Heliotherm web control® regulation system allows you to operate your heat pump online from anywhere in the world.
